By Liu Sola
Translated by Martha Cheung
1993
xxv + 145 pages
ISBN 962-7255-12-2

Singer, composer, actress and writer, Liu Sola is a woman of many talents, as can be seen in the stories presented in this volume. They have a performance quality that strongly suggests pieces for a one-woman show. As such, they provide an exciting diversion from the more conventional type of contemporary Chinese fiction. In her apparent refusal to deal with serious subjects seriously, Liu reveals a spirit of rebelliousness which is particularly appealing to the younger generation of Chinese readers. But behind her frivolity lie the questions of what to write and how to write, which, as writers in a communist regime will know, are questions of crucial political significance. The fact that Liu is a woman adds a further dimension to these significant questions, and her handling of them.

The stories translated here were all written in the mid 1980s, while she was living in Beijing.

Review(s)

'Ms Liu's stories focus on art and artists, but they are really stories about individuals and individualism.'
